Holes by Louis Sachar is about a boy named Stanley Yelnats who has terrible luck. A gypsy cursed the Yelnats family, and they struggle trying to undo it. Stanley is sent to a juvenile detention camp, Camp Green Lake, for a crime that he did not do. Stanley and the other boys at the camp are forced to dig gigantic holes every day. Stanley and Zero become best friends, and they stick together during the hard times. In the end, the curse is lifted. Stanley is reunited with his family, and Zero remains his best friend.
Use in classroom- This would be a good book to read when the students are learning about the organization of a story. Students would pinpoint the different parts of the story, and I would write their observations large notebook paper.
